Demos this Holiday Season

Change is the only constant in life and shopping behaviors are no exception.

I’ve worked in the retail segment, specifically for retail demos and events, for over 15 years, and during that time I’ve noticed many of the changes that this Forbes article reports on. Customers are definitely relying on their mobile phones and in-store demo specialists for consumer ratings, more so than they trust the store personnel!

With the Holiday season upon us, it’s even more important to stay on top of the buying trends and behaviors of your shoppers for your demos this Holiday season.

Picking up groceries used to consist of a list and a trip to the store to check off the items but nowadays consumers are involved in the shopping experience, sometimes even before they reach the store. According to Denise Lee Yohn, author of What Great Brands Do, stores are now being used as the marketing and advertising tools to convert you to new brands, whereas previously, their strategy was much more simplified and directed towards a single item for purchase conversions.

With evolving online customer product ratings and blogs, the most trusted resource for a shopper is typically themselves. A shopper is more likely to purchase a product after reviewing positive ratings online, from a friend, or from an in-store demo specialist. Shoppers place more emphasis on brand customer service now; they evaluate them on how they respond to their customers, especially via social media. Digital marketing guru Jay Baer comments, “The divide between customer service and marketing [has] evaporated.”

As Denise concludes, “Feel good holiday ads are on the out while product demos and customer conversations garner more marketing attention.”
